The inspiration for the installation comes from the eponymous poem Keeping things whole by Mark Strand. The poem, in a deeper sense, pleads for integrity against the usual fragmentation that happens in life. It aims to indicate the different disintegrations in our society and in our personal lives and it does not want life to be shattered into pieces. It should be taken as a whole. Because we humans are selfish and unaware that unity is strength, we all divide society into fragments. In my work, I wanted to depict today's divided society, one that does not stand together and lacks unity. We can see that each figure does not really show its character, it keeps to itself, and lacks emotions. Some figures even have hollow heads, lacking empathy, and are dehumanized. The installation is arranged in a way that allows the viewer to walk past the figures, stand among them, and thus become part of the dehumanized glass figures. This way, I encourage the viewer to engage in self-reflection. In addition to the installation, I also produced a shorter animation.
